Printable version Thursday 21 June 2012 Last updated at 18:30

Friday 6 July 2012 in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of York.

Registration now open.

We would like to announce that we now have confirmed a series of high-profile actors, actor-trainers and academics for the above one-day symposium on acting for television.

Actors include: Siân Phillips (I, Claudius; Shoulder to Shoulder; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), Gethin Anthony (Game of Thrones, Into the Storm), Naomi Sheldon (Edwin Drood, The Hour) and Letty Butler (Marple, Young Dracula).

Actor-trainers include: Geoff Colman (Head of Acting, Central School of Speech and Drama), Ed Hicks (Head of Film, TV and Radio, RADA) and Sam Ellis (TV Acting tutor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School).

Academics include: Professor Stephen Lacey (University of Glamorgan), Professor Roberta Pearson and Mr Richard Hewett (University of Nottingham).

Papers will include research on approaches to actor training for the small screen, performance choices for television work, aging and the actor on television and actors’ rights and legislation on television. The event will also include cross-disciplinary discussions on rehearsal, performance and training practices, which will include panels of actors, academics and actor-trainers.

The symposium is part of a larger project aiming to provoke a more holistic understanding of television acting: encompassing not only the textual analysis of end-products but also the consideration of training, process, performance preparation and execution, and other impacting factors of industry/production. The event is intended as a launch-point for discussion and debate in this area, bringing together actors, academics and actor-trainers to share ideas and perspectives. By combining academic research with industry-derived insights, this project aims to position the actor at the centre of understanding regarding televisual performance.

Please see the website for a more detailed symposium schedule: http://www.york.ac.uk/tftv/news-events/events/2012/playing-the-small-screen/

The registration fee for the day is: £30/£15 students and unwaged.
